Located in the southwestern tip of Virginia, the Heart of Appalachia region offers a rugged and beautiful landscape and a rich cultural identity, from the Cherokees to Bluegrass music. There's no better way to experience the natural beauty of Appalachia and its people than by bicycle. Winding through the region's breathtaking scenery for 125 miles, the Heart of Appalachia Bike Route offers paved and gravel paths, rail-trails, and single-track side trails for the ultimate road and mountain biking adventure in southwest Virginia.
 
The official state path winds through charming cities, including a two-mile ride from St. Paul to Sugar Hill, and diverse terrains and elevations, including Jefferson National Forest. Along the way, you'll see natural wonders and abundant wildlife. Start at the visitor's center on 4th Avenue in downtown St. Paul with trail information.

    The Heart of Appalachia Bike Route offers 125 miles of scenic adventure through the westernmost tip of Virginia. The path is located between the six-mile Guest River Trail near the Kentucky border and Burke’s Garden, a geological wonder that sits between the Rich and Brushy Mountains, just south of Bluefield, West Virginia. The official state bicycle route of Virginia traverses through the region’s rugged and beautiful landscape, including the Jefferson National Forest.

    Yes. The Heart of the Appalachia Bike Route offers diverse terrains and surfaces, including paved and gravel roads, rail-trails, single-track side trails, and on-road stretches through the beautiful Heart of the Appalachia Region. There are several un-paved sections of the trail that’s perfect for mountain biking or road bikes with knobby tires, aa well as climbs to more than 6,585 feet. Starting at Gose’s Mill in Burke’s Garden, the ride traverses in and out of the Jefferson National Forest.
