Explore Appalachia on The Bike Trails of southwest Virginia

Located in the southwestern tip of Virginia, the Heart of Appalachia region offers a rugged and beautiful landscape and a rich cultural identity, from the Cherokees to Bluegrass music. There's no better way to experience the natural beauty of Appalachia and its people than by bicycle. Winding through the region's breathtaking scenery for 125 miles, the Heart of Appalachia Bike Route offers paved and gravel paths, rail-trails, and single-track side trails for the ultimate road and mountain biking adventure in southwest Virginia.
 
The official state path winds through charming cities, including a two-mile ride from St. Paul to Sugar Hill, and diverse terrains and elevations, including Jefferson National Forest. Along the way, you'll see natural wonders and abundant wildlife. Start at the visitor's center on 4th Avenue in downtown St. Paul with trail information.
